Music Magazine - Construction Process

This is a video I have made showing the construction process of my whole music magazine. The images in the video show the exact order that it was made in.

Music Magazine - Q7: "Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?"

Music Magazine - Q6: "What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?"

Music Magazine - Q5: "How do you attract/address your audience?"

Music Magazine - Q4: "Who would be your audience for your media product?"

When making my music magazine, I intended it to look like both NME magazine and KERRANG! magazine as I have researched into these rock genre magazines previously during this project and have liked their style in regards to rock.

For this part of my evaluation, I have decided to investigate both magazine's target audience's to be able to get an idea of what the target audience would be for my music magazine.

NME Audience Profile

NME has a readership of around 309,000 and a circulation of 40,948. With this, NME has an average age of 24 and ratio of 69% male readers and 31% female readers, this shows that this magazine is mostly read by male readers and attracts them most.
On average, 52% of NME's readers are working full-time, 7% working part-time and 29% are still studying. This means that the readership comes under A,B and C1, focusing on the wealthy people to buy the magazine as at least 65% of the readership belong to this social class.

Rock fashion and NME...
... The music scene has a strong belief in looking good which is shown in the artist's that the magazine show with what they are wearing. This attracts the young readers as they want to look good and stylish, giving the impression that NME have a focus on a younger audience as well.

KERRANG! Audience Profile

This is what the Bauer Media website has to say about KERRANG!'s audience profile ....

KERRANG! have a readership of 15-24 year old readers (60% male and 40% female). Statistically, active consumers of KERRANG! are also active consumers of computer games, media and fashion. The buyers of this magazine also, on average, buy 31 albums in a year, showing their blatant interest in music. KERRANG! are also said to play a crucial role in the UK scene and celebrates all that is fresh and new. The magazine is Metal focussed.

Their readership stretches out to 421,000 and they have a circulation of 44,013. KERRANG! have a target audience class of A,B and C1, but also have E as a lot of students buy the magazine.

Rock fashion and KERRANG!...
... Fashion is important to this music magazine. This is shown through how people mimic the look of their favourite rock star heroes. This gives KERRANG! a chance to express all forms of rock classes.

----------------
To find out my target audience is, I constructed a survey;

By doing this, I got to have an influence on what music magazine mine is most like, giving me an idea of what my own target audience is.

These are the results to my survey;

These results show that most people think that my music magazine is most like Kerrang! (83.3%) than NME (16.7%).

This means that the target audience for my music magazine is like Kerrang!'s with a both strong male and female consumer base. This shows that the fashion I have used in my magazine will influence teenagers to buy 'BANDTA'. My target audience is a range of A, B, C1 and E, creating a variety of readers to be my audience.

Music Magazine - Q3: "What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?"

This a video that I have made on a website called xtranormal, which answers the question above.

Music Magazine - Q2: "How does your media product represent particular social groups?"

At the start of this project, I decided to use the rock genre as the theme for my music magazine. This was because I enjoy a lot of rock music and buy magazines like NME and KERRANG!, which therefore gave me an understanding and idea on what had to be included in them.

I started to research into the rock genre and found that a lot of it was quite dark and heavy and the ages of people that are normally interested in rock are between the ages of 15-40, on average. I picked out the teenage social group and found that not many rock magazines reflected this group that much.

With this, I decided to use a teenage rock chick for my feature image to reflect this target group. I have found, through images on google and Facebook, that a lot of teenagers tend to wear toned down rock fashions which I have used in my images of 'Kat Wild' with the leather jacket and make-up.

I think that this social group is a good place for my music magazine to fit in as it has a need in terms of less crude language in the articles, which I have made sure not to do much of in mine.

Evaluation Question 2 on PhotoPeach

Focusing on this social group helped me to highlight and find my target audience.
